Puppet show: Behind the scenes

year: 2024
place: Jihlava, Czech Republic
collaboration: The Jihlava Architecture Manual (JAM)

The townhouses of Jihlava have witnessed centuries of change, from reconstructions to shifts in their use. Behind their facades lie hidden treasures and untold stories. Silver House No. 21, once a spacious home for a single owner, later transformed over the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque periods to house multiple families. Each adaptation leaves traces of lives once lived, concealing surprises and secrets within its walls.

A puppet show was held in the Red Salon of the Silver House with the aim of creating new stories and experiences connected to this historic building. Together with children and passersby, we imagined the possible stories that could have unfolded there and the characters who might have inhabited its mysterious spaces.

The project used puppet theatre and model to explore the architecture, while creative writing helped connect with the space. A scale model of the Red Salon was created to further investigate and understand its dimensions. Fictional characters and additional scenography were developed collaboratively with the children, supporting the fairytale that was written and brought to life during the performance.
